We are nine months out and are touring many rigs, looking for the one that fits our lifestyle and working, cooking, and exploring. The Grand Design Solitude 3740BH is a rear bunkhouse fifth-wheel RV we thought could be a great option for us. The bunkhouse can be converted to an office and painting studio and the kitchen is bigger than we thought it would be.
The allure of a large office space led us to have a fairly in-depth conversation about how important, or how much focus we should give our work life. Dedicating that much space to an office would mean we are putting our “day job” first in our lives and we are not sure that is what we want to do.
Yes, we work full-time and very much enjoy our work but should it be the cornerstone of our lives? Probably not, we feel.
One of the goals of living full-time on the road is adventure and exploration. Dedicating an entire room for our workspace leads us further away from that goal and closer to the lives we have now. As we move this process, we are not only picking a rig, but we are also realigning our priorities and figuring out what is most important to us. Working from a desk in the rig will work perfectly for us and also reinforce that work is NOT the center of our lives and priorities.
That being said, the thought of being able to have a dedicated painting studio in the bunkhouse area does bring me great joy. We could completely redo the bunkhouse (take out the bunks and everything else) and create a studio space and add just a desk for my office. We could also add an area for storage. Then the bunkhouse would not be just an office or workspace.
Of course, the kitchen is probably our biggest priority, and the layout and space in the Solitude 3740BH kitchen are definitely better than in the Momentum toy hauler we toured. The cooktop/oven was not the larger one we like and that is something to take into consideration. The pantry was a plus, too!
And, oh, the chaise! I LOVED it and could see myself relaxing on it often.
The one deal-breaker could be the lack of a washer/dryer. We had the thought to covert the bathroom in the bunkhouse into a laundry area but we’re not sure if that can be done and if we even want to attempt it. And then, we found the washer/dryer hookups in the closet, so all that talk about converting a bathroom was for naught!
