Break-ups are typically painful, but in this case, I have no regrets, anger, or disappointments. Instead, I have fond memories and extreme gratitude. Sometimes you need to move on to something better. Tofutti sour cream, I thank you for your years of service, but I have found a replacement: Simple Truth Plant-Based Sour Cream.
Sour cream is one of the three things I miss the most in my dairy-free life, with butter and heavy cream being nearly equally miss-able. Tofutti sour cream has been around forever, it seems, and was there when I first went dairy-free. I cherished it for years, used it in countless recipes, and highly recommended it. Although it does not have much flavor, its creaminess and thick consistency worked so well in my recipes. With Tofutti, I found a replacement for the texture of sour cream to some degree, yet I was still yearning for the delicious flavor of sour cream. Enter Kite Hill.
When I tried Kite Hill for the first time, I was ecstatic! The flavor was the closest to sour cream I had tasted, but then the excitement waned when I experienced a bit of an aftertaste, and then there was the not-so-good runny texture. Just like with Tofutti, a hit and a miss. So, I sometimes mixed the two, thinking I would get the flavor and texture, but no, still not the “real” sour cream my brain remembered.
I was in King Soopers the other day, grabbing ingredients for an upcoming macaroni salad recipe and video I was planning, and there it was, nestled on the shelf with the cow-based sour creams: Simple Truth Plant-Based Sour Cream. When I saw it, I was intrigued but skeptical. I was hoping to get more Tofutti, but there was none on the shelves. Kite Hill was in abundance, but I was waning in my desire for them lately. So, I thought, why not and grabbed the Simple Truth.
When I arrived home and put away the groceries, my new-found sour cream was the only item left on the counter, and it was calling me to open it and have a taste, which I did. As soon as the contents of the spoon hit my mouth, I screamed out to Rich, “holy cow, you have got to taste this stuff!”
When Rich tried it, he had the same reaction as I did without the screaming. He agreed that it tasted very close to cow-sour cream, and the texture was spot on as well. I immediately announced with glee, “this is my new sour cream!”
The next day knew I had to conduct a taste test to determine if Simple Truth was really the ideal sour cream substitute. I microwaved a russet potato and added Earth Balance, kosher salt, Simple Truth sour cream, a sliced green onion. I took a bite, closed my eyes, and waited for the flavors to hit my brain. Would I believe I was eating a potato with “real” sour cream, or would it taste “less than” or like a substitute?
Based on the title of this article, you probably know what I thought about the taste. Yes, it was AMAZING and everything I had been missing for years. I now have sour cream with a taste and texture that reminds me of flavors lost for me for so long.
Simple Truth is now my go-to sour cream, and I highly recommend it. I read a few reviews online, and some people thought it needed more sourness in its flavor. I can’t entirely agree, but a squirt or two of lemon juice will do the trick if you do.
discover. cook. enjoy.
